The Story Behind the Pen
Erika Killen is a Los Angeles–based author of historical fiction, supernatural mysteries, fantasy, and slow-burn romance. Her novels are inspired by a lifelong fascination with history, folklore, forgotten places, and the possibility that the world holds far more mysteries than we understand.
Raised by a college professor who taught American history, Erika grew up surrounded by stories of the past. That early influence developed into a lasting passion for historical research and genealogy. She has explored small towns, centuries-old cemeteries, abandoned nineteenth-century homes, historic properties, and places where generations of families once lived. The colorful characters and unexpected discoveries she encountered often find their way into her fiction.
Erika’s love of literature began early, with Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre remaining her favorite novel. The atmospheric storytelling of the Brontës, the supernatural worlds of Anne Rice, and her fascination with the unexplained have shaped her approach to fiction. She is drawn to stories where history and mystery intertwine, ordinary people encounter extraordinary circumstances, and the past continues to shape the present.
Erika began her creative career in film and television as a professional makeup artist. She also wrote screenplays with her longtime friend and writing partner, Amber Tabangay. Their collaboration led to their first coauthored novel, On River’s Edge.
Later, as a portrait and wedding photographer, Erika developed an appreciation for composition, lighting, atmosphere, and the details that bring a scene to life. Her interests also include digital art, art journaling, and creative scrapbooking. Today, she draws on that visual background when creating characters, settings, and original cover designs.
Although storytelling had always been part of her life, Erika put off writing and publishing a novel of her own for years. She carried ideas, characters, notes, partially written manuscripts, and fictional worlds with her while the prospect of finishing and publishing a novel felt daunting.
Eventually, Erika decided to stop waiting. She returned to the stories she had carried for years and began turning them into finished novels. Her solo debut, The Lost Daughter of Rathmore, marked the beginning of that long-awaited chapter. Since then, she has published multiple novels and supernatural fantasy series.
Her fiction ranges from the centuries-old vampires, witches, and supernatural beings of The Learmonth Series to the secrets and mysteries of small-town America in The Fallow County Novels, as well as the extraordinary worlds of The Impossible Theatre Series. Although her stories cross genres and centuries, they share her fascination with memorable characters, carefully researched settings, complicated relationships, and mysteries waiting to be uncovered.
Erika lives in Los Angeles, California, where she continues to write, research, and dream up new fictional worlds, usually with one of her seven parrots making its opinion known. She also shares her home with Buster, a red-eared slider turtle.
