III. The Fifth Road

The red door has never belonged anywhere.

It appears without warning, opens where no doorway should exist, and vanishes before anyone can understand why.

This time, it leaves someone behind.

His name is Colin Weatherson. He is fae, impeccably mannered, dressed for another century, and very certain that when he entered a fairy mound in Yorkshire, the year was 1810.

By morning, there is a dead woman on the lawn of Blackthorne Manor.

More deaths follow. A witch. A human. A wolf. A vampire. Each body carries evidence pointing somewhere different, as though the killer knows exactly how much distrust already exists between Fallow County’s four supernatural factions and how little pressure it will take to break the peace.

Samantha Keating has spent months learning the rules of Alderwick.

Now the rules are changing.

Something unfamiliar is stirring in her blood. Owen Maddox is no longer at her side. A stranger from the past has taken refuge beneath her roof. And somewhere among the people Samantha has learned to trust, someone is building a lie one body at a time.

Fallow County has always had four roads.

No one knows where the fifth one leads.
