IV. The Quiet Boundary
For the first time in months, Samantha Keating is writing again.
She is also leaving Blackthorne.
With the Fifth Road quiet and Colin Weatherson finally free from sanctuary, Samantha travels to Manhattan with Colin and Miles. For Colin, the city is a future he was never supposed to see. For Samantha, it offers distance from everything she has lost, everything she has survived, and the man she barred from her home.
Back in Alderwick, change is coming just as quickly.
New mayor Rebecca Reiter has ambitious plans for a town she barely knows. Better broadband and safer winter access sound harmless until a proposed improvement to the road beneath Rusk Mountain threatens a protected supernatural boundary. Sheriff Trystan Holt knows enough to understand the danger. Rebecca knows enough to recognize when people are hiding something from her. Neither is inclined to back down.
Then a mistake in the field weakens one of the old protections just as Founders’ Day begins drawing outsiders toward Alderwick.
Samantha comes home to a county caught between secrecy and progress, a new mayor asking questions no one can answer honestly, and an old love she has never fully stopped mourning.
Fallow County has always survived by protecting its boundaries.
Now it has to decide which ones can change.
