The Shape of Absence

III. The Shape of Absence

Madeleine is gone.

The black door that took her has vanished without a trace, and before the company of the Théâtre de l’Impossible can begin to understand what happened, the theatre tears itself out of Prague and reappears in Galway.

Then a woman in a red coat appears onstage.

Aoife Kearney remembers crossing a road with a bag of groceries. She remembers headlights. She does not remember dying. Outside the theatre, no living person can see or hear her. Inside, she can touch the world again.

Her arrival is only the first impossible change. The company members who have been trapped indoors by daylight for four centuries can suddenly walk beneath the sun. Mikhail, a vampire old enough to have forgotten its warmth, discovers sunlight no longer burns him. And buried in Galway’s archives are records of the Impossible Theatre that contradict everything the company remembers about its own past.

While Aoife searches for the truth about her death, Julien refuses to give up on Madeleine. Their investigations begin separately, then uncover the same disturbing possibility.

The theatre has been keeping secrets far longer than any of them knew.
